27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due,
    when it is in your power to act.
28 Do not say to your neighbor,
    “Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you”—
    when you already have it with you.(A)
29 Do not plot harm against your neighbor,
    who lives trustfully near you.(B)
30 Do not accuse anyone for no reason—
    when they have done you no harm.

31 Do not envy(C) the violent
    or choose any of their ways.

32 For the Lord detests the perverse(D)
    but takes the upright into his confidence.(E)
33 The Lord’s curse(F) is on the house of the wicked,(G)
    but he blesses the home of the righteous.(H)
34 He mocks(I) proud mockers(J)
    but shows favor to the humble(K) and oppressed.
35 The wise inherit honor,
    but fools get only shame.

Get Wisdom at Any Cost

Listen, my sons,(L) to a father’s instruction;(M)
    pay attention and gain understanding.(N)
I give you sound learning,
    so do not forsake my teaching.
For I too was a son to my father,
    still tender, and cherished by my mother.
Then he taught me, and he said to me,
    “Take hold(O) of my words with all your heart;
    keep my commands, and you will live.(P)
Get wisdom,(Q) get understanding;
    do not forget my words or turn away from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;(R)
    love her, and she will watch over you.(S)
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get[a] wisdom.
    Though it cost all(T) you have,[b] get understanding.(U)
Cherish her, and she will exalt you;
    embrace her, and she will honor you.(V)
She will give you a garland to grace your head
    and present you with a glorious crown.(W)

10 Listen, my son,(X) accept what I say,
    and the years of your life will be many.(Y)
11 I instruct(Z) you in the way of wisdom
    and lead you along straight paths.(AA)
12 When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;
    when you run, you will not stumble.(AB)
13 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go;
    guard it well, for it is your life.(AC)
14 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked
    or walk in the way of evildoers.(AD)
15 Avoid it, do not travel on it;
    turn from it and go on your way.
16 For they cannot rest until they do evil;(AE)
    they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble.
17 They eat the bread of wickedness
    and drink the wine of violence.(AF)

18 The path of the righteous(AG) is like the morning sun,(AH)
    shining ever brighter till the full light of day.(AI)
19 But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;(AJ)
    they do not know what makes them stumble.(AK)

God’s Love and Ours

Dear friends, let us love one another,(A) for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God(B) and knows God.(C) Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.(D) This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son(E) into the world that we might live through him.(F) 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us(G) and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.(H) 11 Dear friends,(I) since God so loved us,(J) we also ought to love one another.(K) 12 No one has ever seen God;(L) but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.(M)

13 This is how we know(N) that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.(O) 14 And we have seen and testify(P) that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.(Q) 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God,(R) God lives in them and they in God.(S) 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love.(T) Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.(U) 17 This is how love is made complete(V) among us so that we will have confidence(W) on the day of judgment:(X) In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear,(Y) because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

19 We love because he first loved us.(Z) 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister(AA) is a liar.(AB) For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen,(AC) cannot love God, whom they have not seen.(AD) 21 And he has given us this command:(AE) Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.(AF)

20 My son,(A) pay attention to what I say;
    turn your ear to my words.(B)
21 Do not let them out of your sight,(C)
    keep them within your heart;
22 for they are life to those who find them
    and health to one’s whole body.(D)
23 Above all else, guard(E) your heart,
    for everything you do flows from it.(F)
24 Keep your mouth free of perversity;
    keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
25 Let your eyes(G) look straight ahead;
    fix your gaze directly before you.
26 Give careful thought to the[a] paths for your feet(H)
    and be steadfast in all your ways.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left;(I)
    keep your foot from evil.

Warning Against Adultery

My son,(J) pay attention to my wisdom,
    turn your ear to my words(K) of insight,
that you may maintain discretion
    and your lips may preserve knowledge.
For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey,
    and her speech is smoother than oil;(L)
but in the end she is bitter as gall,(M)
    sharp as a double-edged sword.
Her feet go down to death;
    her steps lead straight to the grave.(N)
She gives no thought to the way of life;
    her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it.(O)

Now then, my sons, listen(P) to me;
    do not turn aside from what I say.
Keep to a path far from her,(Q)
    do not go near the door of her house,
lest you lose your honor to others
    and your dignity[b] to one who is cruel,
10 lest strangers feast on your wealth
    and your toil enrich the house of another.(R)
11 At the end of your life you will groan,
    when your flesh and body are spent.
12 You will say, “How I hated discipline!
    How my heart spurned correction!(S)
13 I would not obey my teachers
    or turn my ear to my instructors.
14 And I was soon in serious trouble(T)
    in the assembly of God’s people.”(U)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(A)(B)

35 While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts,(C) he asked, “Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David?(D) 36 David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit,(E) declared:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
    under your feet.”’[a](F)

37 David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

The large crowd(G) listened to him with delight.

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

38 As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(H) 40 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

The Widow’s Offering(I)

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put(J) and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”(K)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(L)

13 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”

“Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”(M)

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives(N) opposite the temple, Peter, James, John(O) and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”

Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(P) Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

“You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues.(Q) On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.(R)

12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.(S) 13 Everyone will hate you because of me,(T) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(U)
